soap snobbery

A Dave that I may or may not know came to visit me with soap today. Now, this may not sound very exciting, but it IS exciting. It's internet soap. Internet soap from France that came in a brown package 3 years ago that we still haven't used up.

In the past, my family always used Pears. Pears is made with glycerin and does not froth very much. I was under the impression that in order to get a frothy cleansing product, I would have to use body wash or shower gel. So that's what I did. For many years I purchased bottles and bottles of the stuff, and it was kind of an expensive way to go, considering I was buying a product that consisted mostly of water, but I was unaware of the alternatives.

So, finally, about 3 or 4 years ago, Dave became interested in wet shaving and came across olive oil based soap, and on recommendation, went for a batch from Marseilles.

They come in giant cubes, and have to be purchased in bulk. He bought enough soap for 2 people to last 4 years, apparently, in several scents and a couple unscented. They lather like mad and smell amazing.

So today he brought two cubes over, one lavender, and one of rose. They went in the oven with a pan of water to soften before they were cut up.

The rose scented soap sliced up nicely, but the lavender was taken out too early and crumbled when the knife hit it. However, this problem was soon solved with the use of an oven safe ice cube tray I just happen to have. (For the life of me, I don't know why such a thing exists, but I'm supposing that it could alternately be used for chocolate. or soap?)

That's right. Heart shaped lavender soaps.

He says he's trying Syria next. Maybe they'll let him order in smaller amounts...
